    Predictions:

Obama and Romeny definitely on the Democratic and GOP tickets respective. Predict Presidential nod to Romney, Veep slot to Obama but could change.

Thomspon to enter GOP debate and flame out. Gingrich similarly McCain campaign to disintegrate. GOP Primary will be Romney v. Rudy, with the imprimatur of Bush deciding factor (remember, Republicans like to fall in, Dems like to fall in love.)

Dem side less stable. Either a Hillary breakout and total victory, or three-way fight. Predict Edwards will come out the best as other candidates turn guns on each other. Edwards-Obama Ticket the result.

If Gore enters: will crush all before him and a Gore-Obama ticket the result.

    WH victory: Definitely Dems.

Romney's similar to Enda. Immaculate quiff, nice with a soundbite, willing to say or do anything to get elected.

Isn't Gore a bit single-issue since he started his Green crusade?

I'd be all for it, but would John Doe of Dayton Ohio buy it?
If there is a future, it will be Green.

Yeah, but he's also got a lot of experience to draw on. He's been outspoken on numerous other issues besides the environment, especially the war. But he's also talking outside the establishment which is important. It will be a 'change' election, and so far all the Dems have been doing is there usual pandering and shameless pursuit of centrist mediocrity.

Mitt Romney is a slimey git. He won't make it through the primaries no matter how much Mormon money he spends. I mean come on that crowd are just weird. Wouldn't be so definate about the democratic victory quite yet. The Democratic congress is losing credibility fast.

V good analysis of the field Daragh.
There is such goodwill towards Gore that if the US Election was decided by the rest of the World, Gore would get the biggest landslide in history.
He stands an outstanding chance of being President.
Devoid of Karl Rove, the election might even be reasonably clean fought.
The GOP candiadate will undoubtedly try to marginalise Gore as dangerous to the economy and Wall St but Gore has plenty of clout in the corporate world.
He ticks all the right boxes and has the star power to mobilise overnight if he comes late to the party. Most of all, almost everyone who voted for him in 200 will do so again and a hefty percentage who didn't will only be too happy to rectify matters.

In short Gore/Obama is a GOP nightmare but an even bigger nightmare for Team Clinton.
This is an election the Dems cannot even think about losing but Hilary stands a huge chance of doing just that. She is the candidate the GOP want in the other corner more than any other.

The biggest danger for Gore is that many Americans hate being wrong and hate being reminded of it.
For many Gore's re-emergence is like being told "Congrats on washing 8 years of American history dowm the pan, now let's see if we can start again and repair the mess". This group woukd prefer if Gore had continued to grow his beard and just fade away.

Has a poll ever being conducted asking people, given what has occured subsequently,if they had their 2000 vote back again what way would they now vote?

This is another site where you can play around with the electoral map and try different scenarios.

Not necessarily. Pretty much any Dem bar Kucinich has been polled as womping the GOP alternatives (Clinton beats McCain, Romney and Giuliani.)
GOP won't hit Gore on economy: electorate already recognises that Democrats are better on the economy, and are getting disillusioned with Bush's massive deficit and stagnant job market. Nope, next election is gonna be all about the Global War on Terrah! Giuliani's been ratcheting up. Only Two candidates at the last GOP debate (McCain and Ron Paul) said they wouldn't torture. Romney got huge applause by proposing the US 'double Guantanamo.' Brownback declared he would 'call Jack Bauer.' This apparently resonates with the public.

As for you DR, it aint Mormon money, its Romney money. This is the guy who founded Staples, and he's been whipping the ass of McCain and Romney in fundraising. He'll slither through the primaries despite running to the left of Kennedy in 94 because he's willing to say ANYTHING and the GOP doesn't care if he actually believes it, just if he'll do it to get their vote. Want a sample? At the first debate Mitt was asked 'what do you not like about America?' His response:

Wow, thats a tough one. I can't think of anything. Gosh... I love America.

It was at that moment I knew he'd win.

Having said that you're right about eroding credibility of Dem congress. Be interesting to see if Bloomberg seriously enters the race as an independent (has set aside $1Bil to do so) with Hagel as his running mate. Think thats a net loss to the GOP vs. the Dems, but will shake things up.
