Drjim you're forgetting Terence Flanagan, Artane.

The new cllr nominees are usually decided by the membership - in FG at least.

However, the councils actually have to vote for them.

I wouldn't touch co-option if you paid me! It is an uphill struggle always. Better to be a fresh candidate with a platform rather than go in mid stream and try to hang on.
Even worse is the fact I was co-opted from outside the PDs in 2002 and thought everything would be fine. Once I got into the PDs I realised I wouldnt fit in, didnt like the people, policies, attitude or back slapping.
I would advise anyone with an eye on a political career to avoid co-option. If you are happy to tread water for a couple of years and wouldn't worry if you lose in a couple of years, go for it. But be certain, very very certain you know what you are getting into!!

i refused co-option in waterford and won a seat 8 months later. (2 years is plenty to make an impact. anyone with a co-option offered to them should take it)
