Independent goes independent for first time in a decade

Independent goes independent for first time in a decade

The Irish Independent has broken the tradition of the 1997 and 2002 elections, and has not called on FF/PD to be re-elected.

Indeed, today's paper has a leaning to FG with more pics of Enda and prominance for Fine Gael in articles.

An article making fun of Michael McDowell's pledge to return 10 seats is also printed.

The editorial itself is very Irish Times in calling on voters to.....vote.

Kevin Myers seems to be taking the Eoghan Harris line - the bold media doing poor Bertie down and telling people how to vote, while Enda nice but harmless.

At least as many people despise Myers as admire him, so this might be counterproductive.

And everyone said I have an "interesting" view of the print media in this country. Dúirt mé sin libh.

Whilst I do not like the PD's or their policies, I detest the Indo even more. If the PD's are hurt in the election, so be it. It is the people's choice. If the Indo had run with these type of articles a week ago, I think it would have boosted PD support. It seems to show there's some integrity left in the PD party. Obviously the PD's didn't pay proper homage to the great and good at the Indo. Having said that, bad choice of PD party leader.

Apart from the Irish Time which is clearly seeking the defeat of FF and FG to win and the Sunday Indo wanting an FF win have any other papers nailed their colours to the mast :

In The Irish Examiner this morning, there was the standard go out and vote piece, but the tone of it was slightly anti-goverment.

Who put this drivel on the main page????? There are an equal number of pictures of Bertie and Enda in my copy of the Indo. Theres a story that JP McManus the countrys most astute gambler has had €45,000 on Bertie to be next Taoiseach. I have noticed a number of times the anti-government stuff no matter how inconsequential gets to the main page. Surely this site shouldn't have a bias.

I think the Sunday Times and the News of the World are the only two papers to firmly editorialise for a particular party.

The Sun Times said it was time for Ahern to go and vote FG.

The NOTW said vote FF and let Bertie finish what he started.
