Michael Martin hasn't a hope in hell of leading FF, after the Nursing Homes fiasco. What Minister goes late to a meeting and doesn't ask what went on before he came in? What Minister doesn't ask his adviser to brief him befor going into a meeting? People in Cork know this, why do you think there is a swing to FG in Cork? It's because MM won't/can't become leader of FF. Dermot Aherne not a hope, this is a guy who was sent up every tree in North County Dublin and London to see if Raphael, Patrick, Damien (Omen) Burke or whatever he was calling himself at the time got money by Il Berto who knew the answer to the question before he ever asked it. Secondly, traditionally there has to be some sort of electoral bounce for having a leader come from a certain area i.e. Lynch in Cork, this isn't going to happen unless South Armagh begins electing TDs.

As I said elsewhere about Micheal Martin, it was his special advisor who was running the Dept of Health as he was spending most of his time in Cork. Whether it was his fault for not reading his briefing notes OR his advisor for not giving him any briefing notes, Martin has to carry the can for sheer incompetence. And yes, the Nursing Homes scandal will follow him.

Martin's star is definitely on the wane.
Cowen is the frontrunner, Lenihan (Brian) came across well during this campaign and seems a lot more capable than I imagined. Mary Hanafin hasn't been seen at all and I honestly can't think of anyone else even worth a mention as an outsider and that includes Dermot Ahern.
