Weather on Thursday - Good/Fair/Poor weather benefits who

in your view. My own take is that if the weather is poor that has the effect of less votes by those in areas where 1 car is the normal. In families with 2 cars or single people with their own car they can get out to vote. Those who rely on walking and dont have a 2nd car (assuming the other partner is using car) will probably be less inclined to vote.

So the middle and upper classes(assuming they will likely have 2nd car) can get out if it is bucketing down.

If the weather is good then people can walk etc

If the weather is crap, less motivated voters won't show up.

The less motivated will be those who think their party is already ************************************, like FG last time, and the PDs? this time.

And those who think there's not much to chose between them.

Heard Fergus Finlay say today that unlike say CJ or Albert, Bertie hadn't really attracted any real loyalists in the party and yet he's popular with the voters.

Are these voters just going say... aaah we like bertie... or will they show up and vote especially if the weather is bad.

And if its good... they might just stay in the garden or go to the beach....

    aaaaahhhhhhhhhh...

I don't know what effect it will have!

Fianna Failers should all call in sick on Thursday. Keep the traffic moving. Rainbow supporters should drive at 20mph to cause traffic jams.

Sinn Fein supporters should sign on early to avoid delays.

True, so bad weather might depress the Sf and lab votes and allow the pds to make a surprise recovery!

Luckily it looks like the weather will be good.

I believe the theory is that low turnout benefits the incumbant parties, high turnout benefits smaller parties, especially the left.

Good weather is supposed to increase turnout (dont think its going to be good enough to go to the beach HP)

So I think the good weather forecast will benefit SF, SWP and GP, plus the independants.

What the Greens need is a September election, with the tail end of a hurricane causing severe structural damage and catastrophic flooding in key Green marginals.
If there is a future, it will be Green.

The higher the turnout, the better the vote for left wing parties...if turnout is up significantly in working class areas relative to 2002 (as it was in the 2004LE relative to 1999) expect SP to get Higgins and Daly elected and expect SF to have over 10 TDs in the next Dail.

Other than the class dimension, an increased turnout is likely to accentuate the general trend in that election - in that the new voters are more likely to support what appears to be the winning team in the contest.

For working couples with children it can be very difficult for both the get to the polling station after a hardd day's work and that battle with commuting, traffic etc. If the weather is poor it is tempting just to put the feet up and take the view that it won't matter if your vote isn't cast.

SF voters will be picked up from and and dropped back to pubs, snooker halls etc by 'party activists'.
