    2nd Election in 2007

What is the possibilty that we could have a second election before the end of the year, that the purpose of new dail would only be to sit discuss the outcome of a boundary commission, dissolve itself and call elections, or if the governemnt does get elected could it collapse on the basis of the outcome of the boundary commission.

Why would the government collapse based on the re gigging on constituencies? The TDs are already elected........

I think it's within the bounds of possibility - we had three general elections in 1981-1982.

anything is possible with this court case this week, if the court rule that the election could only go ahead on the basis that there is another election held shortly on the outcome of the boundary commission.

Those elections had nothing to do with boundaries, the governments just fell.

Surely the most likely reason for a 2nd election is because no stable government could be cobbled together due to the possible numbers involved. If, for example, FG / Lab / Green didnt have the numbers and Lab and / or Green members voted down any potential alliance with FF and noone accepted SF support then, assuming no grand coalition a la Germany, could we be left with a minimal period for a minority government to do essential housekeeping before going back on the electoral trail again?

The "winnners" won't want another election. The "losers" will. The winners, by definition, will have more power than the losers, so it won't in their interests to have another election and lose the power they have gained. Of course, by power it could mean an extra 20 seats in the case of FG. In such circumstances, we'd have a minority government, with another election much later in calendar terms.

I think there's a good chance the next election could be in 2-3 years, after an unstable inter-party government, but unless the results give us absolutely nothing, it probably won't be this year.

If we get a situation where neither FG or FF can govern without two other Parties then it might be difficult to keep such a coalition together - esp if the Economy heads south and 'cutbacks' are required.
