    Election posters

<MOD (Libero)> This thread has been split from a constituency-specific discussion.

Please make use of it for general general election poster discussion.

I'm sure lots of poster-related threads will pop up, from worst-photo to tiniest endoresment of running mate.

That said, there's no harm having a central thread and avoiding TOO many threads on topics like whether or not we should have posters or limit their numbers, etc. </MOD>

Slow dublin people. We've had all our posters up in cork for a week.

And posters are worth the money, time and inconvinence.
They are ugly, intrusive and plain irritating.

And thats just the candidates in my area.

Anyway, I have yet to meet anyone who isnt in a political party who actually thought posters have any use whatsoever and would prefer not to see them littering our streets.

Only politicians can get away with the horrible covering of neighbourhoods with such pap.
People notice when a candidate didn't use posters, just ask the Green Party.

In Pembroke ward a few years ago a trail was run were no posters were used by any party and it failed miserably. Voter turn out was down, when canvassing people didn't even know an election was on. Poster is important. Voters expect to see them and want to see them.

What should be done is a set number of poster per candidate. Each poster gets a stamp from DCC and any poster without a stamp you get fined.

But wouldn't the Cognoscenti also say that having posters all over the place improves name recognition when the punters are filling out the ballot. You're less likely to give a high preference to someone if that name hasn't been imprinted on your eye from constant exposure.
However, banks know they have a duty of care to their clients and I'm sure that this should prevent them lending irresponsibly.

I've just driven from Saggart village to Dublin city centre throw four constituencies and can report the following, Dublin MW, FF posters predominatant, FG second, Labour, SF, Green non existent, Dublin South Central, FF again lead the way, O'Snodaigh making a good showing, a few FG posters with both candidates and some for Byrne, Frank McNamara's poster have a certian absent minded professor look to them, nothing whatsoever for Labour. Dublin SE. fairly even, O'Callaghan and Andrews probably have the edge, Quinn's look a bit austere. Dublin Central is clearly where SF are trying to concentrate the lions share of their resources in the city and Mary Lou is peering down from every lamp post along the quays.

To be fair, FF were the quickest off the mark in Dundalk. There were hundreds of posters up by lunchtime.

However by tea time, there wasn't one to be seen. The Northern Irish took them down and replaced them with SF posters.

After routing out my old dictionary, I would never of described Quinn's poster as austere.

Taught himself and Bertie have the best style and picture in DSE.

Why are posters allowed at all?

Why do we allow politicians give themselves a special exemption to visually litter our cities & towns ?

Either poster sites pass planning laws & are allowed (e.g. billboards) or simple are banned.
