Who said Kenny has to be Taoiseach ?

Maybe I'm missing something here ..

So many people are expressing their unhappiness with Kenny, some even to the degree they would not vote for FG.

The assumption is that LAB+FG will have a coalition majority, presumably with FG being the majority partner in such a coalition.

Yet I fail to see why this in turn presumes Kenny to be Taoiseach.

Couldn't Labour as part of the coalition deal ask for Kenny to step aside in favour of a different FG Taoiseach ?

If I were Gilmore, that's what I would do.

But why? They have no major reason to object to him - which of his many, many ( ) personal views will Labour oppose? Kenny's going to be a chairman, not a chief.

Im fed up of all this negative publicity Kenny seems to get. All because he's a country man and he's slightly wooden in interviews. His personality may not appear to shine in the day of personality politics but for all we know he could be a good taoiseach.

Why should he step aside if Fine Gael are the majority party in a coalition with Labour? As party leader of the majority party in a possible coalition he is entitled to Taoiseach. This isn't 1948 when Richard Mulcahy wasn't acceptable as Taoiseach to coalition partners Clann Na Poblachta due to his civil war record and John A Costello stepped in.

    Why would Gilmore do this?
Surely the weaker the FG Taoiseach the better it is for him. That way he can exert more influence.
If I were Gilmore I would be more than happy with Kenny.

'For all we know' ...............telling indeed.

To answer the OP. The members of FG say Kenny has to be Taoiseach.

It's a fair question and it exposes a great flaw in our politics, that is the allocation of high office on every conceivable basis other than ability to do the job. Geography, party loyalty, gender or in this case arithmetic, are all more important than competence. FF, FG and Lab have all been in government while someone other than their leader was Taoiseach and the world didn't end. It's time to set aside the puerile pissing contest and let the best person take the job.

I've nothing against Kenny. I just don't want him to be Taoiseach.

Unfortunately we don't get a direct vote for Taoiseach, only TDs do. So some of the electorate may reasonably vote based on this.

Well, he wouldn't step aside of his own accord, what I'm saying is that he might be asked to.

Nobody is entitled to be Taoiseach. Although some of the FF lads think they are ...

Exactly. FG will (Barring utter disaster) be the largest party in the next Dail. Their members have voted for Kenny to lead them into that Dail. Any future decision they make won't be down to Labour's input. Labour have precious few options. Go in with FG and an FG leader, stay out, or go in with FF and get decimated at the next election.
If you're the first out the door, that's not called panicking.

But, does it have to be Kenny ? Bear in mind his front bench tried to take him out when I was on my holidays in France.

I think there's room for negotiation there when the GE dice fall.
