FG-Labour to duck stamp duty reform date

(I'm going to have to make a join Fine Gael/Labour logo - will get to that this afternoon)

Fine Gael and Labour are expected to commit to no definite timeframe for the implementation of their proposals to abolish stamp duty for first-time buyers for houses up to €450,000 when they launch their joint election economic policy today.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny and Labour leader Pat Rabbitte will launch the policy, Protecting the Progress, in Dublin. The parties say the policy is an agreed agenda on "tax and jobs". - Irish Times

From what I've been told this morning there will be no mention of 'stamp duty' in the join proposals this morning.

So not only have Fine Gael ditched their botched 3-year plan. The two parties can’t agree on the new fudge…

... but weren’t we told by Brody Sweeney on Monday night that the “new joint policy had gone to the printers”

Looks like Fine Gael’s credibility on Stamp Duty just went down the toilet…

Kenny's 'Man of My Word' Ard Fheis spin wasn't long in unravelling.

According to Mark Hennessy in this morning's Irish Times, Fianna Fáil are set to refrom SD just before the election. FF's credibility on this issue will equally go down the toilet in such an instance.

Cowen never said he wasn't going to deal with the issue - his line has always been if one has to intervene in a market like this it should be done quickly so as not to cause any unnecessary instability.

9 months after the Tanaiste has kiboshed the market comes under your definition of "quickly"?

All he's doing is playing with words. Very cynical.

    A Fairer Stamp Duty Regime
    • Abolition of Stamp Duty for First Time Buyers up to €450,000
    • A restructuring of the stamp duty system for others buyers as follows:
⇒ No stamp duty up to €100,000
⇒ On the next €350,000 a 5% rate will apply
⇒ On the balance a 9% rate will apply
