Weekend voting to be guaranteed by FG Bill

All elections must be held between Friday and Sunday to ensure all those who wish to vote are given the maximum opportunity to do so according to Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD. Deputy Kenny added that no Taoiseach, no matter how afraid of the outcome of an election, should be able to disenfranchise young people by holding elections on a Thursday.

The Party Leader made his comments as Fine Gael published a Private Members Bill (attached below) which will ensure all elections are held on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.

"Friday voting works. In 1999, the European and Local Elections were held on a Thursday with a turnout of 50.21%. However, when the 2004 European and Local Elections were switched to a Friday, turnout rose dramatically to 58.58%.
