    Will the Bye-Elections ever occur?

    A simple question;

    Do you think the three bye-elections due to be held in Dublin South, Donegal South-West and Waterford are ever going to occur considering the fact that the Fianna Fáil/Green Party Coalition is very much slipping to an election calling minority in the Dáil?

    Love to hear your opinions.

    Maybe some of the party activists who post here could undertake to persuade their parliamentary colleagues to advance the case for a change in the law to require that by elections be held no later than 90 days from the vacancy occurring.

    How does this work? Who is it up to to run the elections? And surely there is a time limit or something?

    By convention the party who 'owned' the vacant seat moves the by election writ in the Dail but if the government are so inclined they can vote it down. There's no time limit at present.

    Thanks BvB. Depressing scenario. Paralysis as political tactic, duly enabled by the legislation. Ugh.

    Ideally, it would be a constitutional amendment. Maybe they could combine it with an amendment restricting the powers of the Dail to guarantee debts.
