    3 bye-elections, when?

Waterford, Dublin South and Donegal South West all without proper representation in the Dáil. When will these bye-elections be held?

What is the process in moving the writ? I've heard it mentioned that the opposition can do it however I assume it's up to government to proceed with the elections.

Mary Coughlan said that they won't happen this year. Does this mean we'll see them running alongside the presidential election in 2011?

I think she should be immediately taken to task to tell the people in those constituencies why they won't happen this year, and when they are likely to happen

They won't announce it because they can't just hand 3 seats to the opposition because it'll reduce their majority.

There will be political pressure to hold the bye elections by the summer following the news tonight.

Why? FF and The Greens have the numbers in the Dail to decide when any elections will be held.

That doesn't mean political pressure can't be applied.

For Dublin South last time there was a lot of pressure in the run up. FG I think threatened to move the writ after labour had been talking about it. I remember Keith 2 Seats going mental because FG had seemingly messed it up until FF backed down (another prediction gone hilariously wrong there). So it seems that the thread of moving the writ is quite important and it wouldn't be good politics for the government to vote down a writ being moved. What's more the Dublin South writ is FG's to move (traditionally) so I can't see how they could have one by-election in Dublin South and not have the other two (especially since Donegal vacancy is 6 months longer than DS) and there will likely be a referendum this year at some point too. Its up to FG when this will happen really.

All this highlights the role that the Inds. are playing in supporting this massively unpopular Govt. Will any of these guys get cold feet and decide to jump and go back to their locals as a non FF mudflap?
From my point of view I think Lowry, would enhance his 1st pref vote if he was not seen as part of the govt at election time. (Used always pretend that he was still (unoffically) really still part of FG.)
I might have appointed somebody but I appointed them because they were friends, em, not because of anything they had given me..... (Brian Dobson interview with Bertie Ahern, September 27, 2006 )
