There might be one silver lining to all this - FF might run Shay Brennan again.

It would be interesting to see who FG parachute this time, Liz O'Donnell possibly or even David McWilliams.

I would imagine that there will be no hurry for us to have the by- election within the next 18 months .

Doubled the Party vote. Tripled his personal vote. Got almost 20% of the vote which would deliver a seat in any five seater in a general election.

Brennan just threw his hat into the ring on TV3.

Incorrect. Under Bunreacht na hÉireann the government and Taoiseach get their mandate from Dáil Éireann. Cowen was supported by a majority in the Dáil and that was his mandate. It's a common mistake to think the government is elected by the people - it isn't. The legislature is elected by the people to choose the government. Hopefully this has cleared it up for you.

On the contrary, I would think the government will now want these by-elections up and running considering the damage Lee's resignation will probably do FG.

+1 for Cllr Jim O'Leary. Ran in 07 and should have ran for the first By-Election.

He speaks very well at constituency meetings and he has many views on national policy too. He's not just someone interested in council affairs. He's in favour of a list system to elect TDs.
