"One tenth of all children have serious literacy problems",Irish Times

Severe literacy problems persist despite 25 years of programmes - The Irish Times - Thu, Jun 18, 2009

The Department of Education should employ literacy specialists to give one-to-one tuition to young children to overcome illiteracy. The focus should be in schools in disadvantaged areas. This would save a lot of money in the long run, given the heavy social costs of illiteracy in terms of long term unemployment, welfare dependancy and crime.

As anyone who has worked in a primary school will tell you, 1 in ten kids are either stupid and/or don't want to learn.

I suggest many of these 'stupid' ones grow up to become teachers and thence politicians....

Of course this particular logic of yours provides the perfect let off for teachers doesnt it ?

This is a complete misrepresentation of what was said. In fact if you want to go down this line I would suggest that parents who cannot accept that little Johnny or Mary is not a budding einstein are guilty of a form of abuse against the child - and no, - I am not comparing this abuse with the abuse to which you referred

They do - it's called the Reading Recovery Program.
Realistically speaking, if the majority of humanity remain non-believers, it doesn't matter. No problem! The problem is that the majority of humanity have lost or ignore the deeper human values - compassion, a sense of responsibility. That is our big concern.
