As I just blogged, the difference between this theory and The Matrix, or indeed the embedded virtual worlds your pals envisage, is there is no ur-reality for us to wake up into.
The ur-reality, and the informational interface exists as far beyond us as our plane of existence does to the characters in The Sims.

I kinda get that (in the sense that none of us get anything in the broader sense or whatever) .... The Sims have ceased to exist btw for a few months now.

I've actually suggested on here in times past that ppl here hop into SL and get together for a chat whatever just to see how it works (to no avail) ... and if we don't exist anyway/it isn't real what harm would that do in the first place! .... SL is hypercool re having a pad, setting your place, having discussions in instant time with a "visual" image with an AV all thru the medium of instant chat (like gmail chat) rather than having to constantly "refresh" ... and that extends to either type chat or audio chat

Second Life is for freaks to live out their sex fantasies about paedophilia and bestiality, for companies to sell stuff to sedentary people, and for unambitious Reuters correspondents.

That's very sad JC .... granted one can indeed go that way if desired and SL is FULL of sh_ite if one wants to find it ... but it's just as easy to create an area and exclude that stuff if you wish .... 3 yrs on there kinda has got me to know the ins and outs of the operation

That's too general a statement to cover SL ... yes I agree there is that there... but there is equally a lot more there of benefit which ain't

Chacun a son gout, as they say. If you're happy with it, I'm not going to pee on your hobby. I was just sharing my impression.
In the trailer for the new Battlestar Galactica spin-off series, they feature the concept of experiential virtual worlds, called the hologrid or something.
That sort of embedded virtuality, indistinguishable from actual reality, is likely eventually, given enough computing power.
But that's not really germane to what I was introducing in the OP.
This is a legitimate unifying theory that, better than any of the membrane theories or dimensional theories out there, actually gives answers to all the unanswered questions physics is still grappling with.
That's what I find compelling, and a little unnerving, about it.
This isn't that we are in some virtual reality that we can leave. The theory states that our entire universe is a virtual reality, or as he puts it "a multi-dimensional space-time
    interface."

Yep I can kinda get that ....

    1. Our existence is actually a virtual reality
    2. Our existence we think is real
    3. Some of those in our existence (No.2) explore the infancy of virtual reality (like SL) created by (No. 2)

So No 3 becomes like No. 1

What is to become of No. 2?

That only becomes relevant once either virtual beings or avatars develop independent consciousness. Artificial intelligence is required for them to think, in other words.
