A key aim of the LHC is to find the elusive Higgs Boson - nicknamed the "God Particle" - which is believed by theoretical physicists to explain the existence of mass.
Have we really come this far? Wow...
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

Well if it could disappear a few of our present dificulties into a black hole i.e. Economic collapse and Fianna Fail then is there any way that I can help get it up and running.

I could listen to this man explain science forever - just don't ask me what he said after he said it. This talk at TED by Brian cox on the same topic:

Brian Cox: What went wrong at the LHC | Video on TED.com

Physicist Brian Cox has two jobs: working with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and explaining big science to the general public. He's a professor at the University of Manchester.

Its a poke it and see what happens exercise. Anyone who questions the wisdom of that approach is hustled out of the way in a (metaphorical) strait jacket.
