    Overall education system reform

If you were to overhaul the entire eductaion system, what would you like to see? A couple of interesting ideas recently include streamlining the entry of new teachers into teaching positions (removal of the many options to hold permanent jobs open while the teacher pursues a career elsewhere), reduction in the influence of religious authorities, and the introduction of more electronic based learning (ebooks). What changes would you make?

Time to use that transition year,to educate young people how the real business world operates, give them a headstart instead of falling into business in trial and error way.The school system is geared toward working for someone ,we need the schools to educate young people to be innovators ,business creators, that can play on the global market.
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

social equality of opportunity and excellence should be the two guiding principles.

    1. Require trained teachers to work in the private sector before starting their 40 year career.
    2. Monitor all teachers. Review the work of suspected incompetents. Sack consistently underperforming ones.
    3. Leave open career breaks for a max of 3 years.
    4. Require teachers paid by public funds but who primarily work in private ones, to work one year in Four in a different school.
    5. Ensure every child can get 3 nutritious meals a day while in school.
6 ban all junk food in schools and do not allow secondary kids go out for chips etc.
7 the mandatory subjects should be irish, english., maths, modern irish history and economics/personal finance.
8 oh yeah, make education up to 3rd level actualy free for all but 4% levy payers.ie uniforms, books, food, trips (real ones not teacher junkets) paid for by to state.
If the banks are out for a bail,
and Lenny's efforts end up as a fail,
    when the Somer does come,
    to the Country they'll run,
And leave a Fine mess for the Gael.

Endinf the one Party (FF) state:

Restrict the duration of a teacher's contract to a maximum of 1 year. That would keep them on their very best behaviour - if they want to be offered a new contract.

I would agree with these ones. I would also push that all schooling take place through Irish, this would be done over time, with schools waiting to become a Gaelscoil, developing centres of excellence in Irish.

I would make all public schools non religous.

While we're at it, let's make sure that teachers are around to tuck everyone in at night and read them bedtime stories.

I thought that there had been a bit of a backlash against 'electronic' aids in education lately; affecting attention span and..... ooh; there goes a fly...

I was thinking more along the lines of ebooks, like Amazon's kindle, that is basically a static non luminous display, like a sheet of paper behind a sheet of non reflective plastic. That screen you're looking at right now isn't good for your eyes at all at all, long term.

Give every teacher a laptop plus a course in using the web for education. There are excellent resources on it, but schools would have to have wireless broadband. The above is not prohibitively expensive unlike many of the other proposals mentioned here. Its 2009 but yet most schools in this nation send its teachers into kids (more tech savy than their teachers)-armed with a piece of chalk and a blackboard .

Lets keep the real budgetary situation in mind.
