A quarter of primary schools have 70% foreign nationals

Shocking new figures in today's Indo reveals the sheer volume of immigrant children in our primary schools. 10pc of pupils in primary education - around 44,000 in all were born outside the State and a quarter of primary schools have 70% foreign nationals. Most of these are located in deprived areas. If anybody questioned the wisdom of open borders during the boom, we were told that almost all of them would leave in time of recession. Obviously that has not happened. The department of education now faces the enormous challenge of trying to integrate these children when many don't have English as a first language. And of course, ther are huge spending cuts in English Language provision. This is what comes when you have a corrupt and incompetent party in power who refuse to do long term planning.

The DES has no intention of facing the enormous challenge of integration. It is currently in the process of withdrawing the (inadequate) supports which they were forced to put in place when the tiger was still around.

    Joe,

was the figure not 1/4 have between 10-70%?:

A quarter of primaries, or some 820, have none at all, a half have up to 10pc and the remaining quarter have anything up to 70pc of overseas students.

Fine by me, in the context of the current economic climate.
Perhaps that might encourage some of those here, currently enjoying Irish social welfare benefits, Irish education and Irish healthcare at our expense to feck off home.

Your post is full of conclusions which you have jumped to. For example, you are assuming that because all these children were born outside the state, they do not speak English.

However, there are a number of factors which you may be able to explain to me.

Irish families who returned from America or the UK during the good times. There are many of them and their kids may have been born outside the state. Do they have to apply to become Irish nationals? If so have they done so?

Some people who moved here came from English speaking countries. Are their kids now Irish nationals?

Just because someone is originally from a non-English speaking country does not mean that they cannot speak English.

It is still relatively early in the recession and you will probably see a lot more go home yet.

There definitely is a problem with integrating these children, however is it really much more difficult than English speaking Irish kids going to Gaelscoil? It is a new problem for the country, time will tell how difficult it is.

So we should force immigrants to leave by making their children suffer?
Is it OK by you if irish children also suffer as a result of this strategy?

So you were born here. An accident of birth. How could we get rid of you?

What do they define as foreign?

My son was born here, but his mother wasn't, so he's foreign?

I have relatives who are 100% irish but they were born abroad. Sounds like they'd be 'foreign' too by this measure.

I'd say a fair proportion of Irish people were either born abroad or had one parent born abroad. 25% x 70% = 17%. Could easily be that high.

No, it doesn't quite work out like that when it comes immigration, once they are here we're stuck with them.
Also once you turn the immigration tap on, it will just keep on running. Consider the way London has been transformed over the past 30 years, whereby we have now arrived at a situation where 2 out of every 3 school children are non white.
As with all things in life we shall pay for our stupidity.

No one is making anyone's children suffer. Ease up on the hyperbole. Hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals with no connection to this nation effectively invaded the state at the invite of the government, without the Irish people once being consulted (and when they were given a sole opportunity to do so, they comprehensively passed the citizenship referendum.)
Hence the only people making children suffer are those who came here with their kids and are now staying here on our preposterously high benefits, sponging off our ever shrinking cohort of tax payers. Blame the parents.

There are many Irish kids who don't speak English, are there?

Couple of mill might encourage me to go on holiday for a bit. I'll take cash, gems or bullion. No cheques drawn on Irish banks, please.
