Google Substitute teachers pay (INTO site) God, you sound like such a bully - my way or the highway eh? You're not the one who was moaning about buying a 300K house were you and had a tenant paying 400 a month and on 40k. Most teachers I had were brutal and lazy, so don't give me that guff about how hard working they are.

I wish that were true....... do you think because someone disagrees with your view they make things up purrrleassssse. Now I must do my lovely Gaeilge Gairmuil study so if you don't believe the figures look it up yourself. I'm not saying the job is a piece of cake but the time off and pay are very good. If that sticks in your craw well tough.

Well I have 17 years on your limited student experience, 15 of those in a designated disadvantaged school in the inner city. The hours are far from short - you need to put in a substantial amount in order to be an expert practitioner of your craft. I'm also the designated staff liasion for new and substitute teachers and we expect them to put the requisite hours in - at least if they want to stay with us.

In addition, why do you think there has been little mention of education cutbacks since INTO Congress? What kind of media coverage did the meetings get - what was the media focused on? I suggest you have a closer look at the INTO website and ascertain what really went on at Congress as opposed to accepting a blatantly obvious media bias.
Realistically speaking, if the majority of humanity remain non-believers, it doesn't matter. No problem! The problem is that the majority of humanity have lost or ignore the deeper human values - compassion, a sense of responsibility. That is our big concern.

Subsititute pay is always higher for very obvious reasons. You probably dont realise that you have bulit up tax credits-were you working before this? You dont provide this information. You sound about 20 ,so prob have not figured out the above yet.

What you think does not stick in my craw, it is the dishonest nature of your posting that irks. I do not believe for one minute that you are a trainee teacher. But in the off chance that you are, here's a bit of news for you, teaching is top of the heap on the most stressful jobs league. In short, every penny you get you earn the hard way.

Large classrooms not a serious problem - the many classroom which are too small do pose serious restrictions on the implemention of the revised ciurriculum.
(you may have wanted to comment on CLASS size , not on CLASSROOM size, but as someone who aspires to teach others we must assume that you say what you mean)

There may be more talk about teachers' salaries here and on radio than there is commentry on class-size but the protest marches before Christmas show that this issue is a priority among teachers. As a student teacher you think teachers are over-paid 'for the hours and days per year'.

When (if) you qualify I think you will make a few surprising discoveries about your chosen profession. The hours/days on which you will be obliged to work are the MINIMUM. You will work many more hours and days than this. Teaching a class of thirty young people is very demanding physically and mentally. It's a little like being on stage and putting on a performance. You may find that you have difficulties with your voice which is common among teachers. I can absolutely assure you that for this reason alone you will not find the hours worked are too few.

You will provide the books, IT equipment and requisites you need for your work at your own expense. You will probably be involved every year in fun-raising to maintain / heat the building in which you work - which for some of your career is most likely to be a pre-fab building.

But it is a wonderful and rewarding job!

I wish you well in your pre-service studies. Enjoy this time. When you go out into real schools (and not the ones in your imagination) you'll be organising and paying for your own career-long in-service education.

Get back to us when you have been in the job for a year or two.
