As I posted about the Civil Servant thread, if you want to have a 'teachers only discussion, set up a private chatroom where you won't attract non-teachers.

Is this an open forum where anyone can read and post or not?

They never get sacked or reprimanded in my experience. Teachers on the other hand have a full day of work where they don't have time to post on sites like these.
I am the boss and manage a team of 25. They are inbound telesales agents. They are far more motivated when they surf the net, so I encourage it.

Yes YOU (see I noticed) have a narrow mind. It is absolutely FINE to support your fellow men or women in what they do. But the teachers have much less to worry about than most.

Now... cop on a bit please. There is nothing personal in my posts as I have friends and family who are teachers. They feel the pich but they are also in touch with reality.

The OP makes teachers look bad. Now stand up for the right reasons, sir.

Sure, teachers get long holidays but they are completely exhausted by the time those holidays arrive. Bet your children are shattered come easter break. Imagine how teachers feel.

Im doing close to 72 hours per week (40 day job, the rest my own business), I am working all of this weekend. I also worked yesterday (good friday). I will also be working on monday.

I have done this job for 4 years straight. I get 30 holiday DAYS a year (that is NOT weeks btw)

I dont complain as it is my choice to do what I do in order to make a living.

I dont moan that I only get 30 minutes per day luch at my day job with two 15 minute breaks.

I dont moan about lossing a few hundred euros at the end of the month because my phone says I was 1 minute 30 seconds over my allocated lunch time..

THis is what it is like for my team as one example out of an infinite amount of examples.

The really good agents (commission based) pay wouldnt be far off an entry level teachers salary BUT they gotta work so so hard for that privelage.

30 Kids would be a pleasure Vs 90 deals and convincing to customers for a day.

Nobody complains as its above minimum but well below what you are on, on average.

Teachers only please ! are you serious! ,,,, The exorbitant pay & unbelievably generous terms that (permanent) teachers have is at least 60% of the problem with our education system.

It is quite simply one of the handiest jobs on the island, ,, , , ,want to improve the situation????? Sign up to helping the builders in June July & august build & improve schools ,,,, oh no I forgot ... you're in France at the expense of the tax payer.

The fact is ..... We need to at least double the productivity of (permanent Only!) teachers, or half your wages ,,,,,,,,

You can be incensed all you like ,,, but honestly work out your hourly rate of pay ,,,, using figures that give you 25 days annual leave like the rest of us, and you will soon realise that life is pretty good for you.

I believe in a fair days pay for a fair days work ,,,,,, meaning ,,,,, you are getting paid for NOTHING at the moment ,,,, and should not be earning again until Monday week.

So stop whining ,,,, We all know how much work you ACTUALLY do ,,, because we went to school.

well done on passing your arts degree & all ..... but that was the BEGINNING of your working life! ... not the end!

Out of curiosity i decided to do crunch the numbers myself ..... Please correct them with solid figures ,,,, & keep wishy washy one's to yourself ....

    Secondary School Teacher -

    167 Days Per Year -

Average 7 Hours per day MAXIMUM! (for a real world comparison I'm not going to pay you for having lunch, but i'll give you some time for marking homework etc!)

I'm sure my figures are not 100% correct ,,, but its about right,

    Starting Salary - 32,599 - Hours worked - 1169 *****Pay Rate 27.88 per hour

    Mid Salary - 46,905 - Hours worked - 1169 *****Pay Rate 40.12 per hour

    Top Salary - 63,361 - Hours Worked - 1169 *****Pay Rate 54.20 per hour

And all for an arts degree ? . . . . . Nice work if you can get it ,,,, So before teachers start to complain about cutbacks ..... you should first accept you are the main problem with the education system.

How are your schools coping with the increased stress brought on by the recession? Two teachers in my school are off with long term stress, probably accentuated by the increased social problems as a result of the recession. I believe our job is far more difficult than it has ever been and we are not very well rewarded for this.

We have enough threads on p.ie, dedicated to slagging teachers off so I would appreciate answers from teachers only on this thread.
I expect the teachers are coping very well with two weeks Easter holidays. Six or seven weeks when they go back and then they have almost three months off. The stress, the stress!

Did anyone hear Carol O'Byrne on the radio earlier in the week, the teacher who rang up the Pat Kenny live phone-in with Brian Lenihan?

She's 30 years in teaching, at the top of the salary scale, earning 63k as she put it herself, neglecting to mention the 5k+ in allowances (maybe she didn't feel she'd actually earned that extra money).

The self-pity on display was gob-smacking. She'd cried herself to sleep over the pension levy. She now understood how people hung themselves. She even threatened to become a criminal to avoid paying her taxes.

The irony that her own 70k per annum from the state was funded by other honest tax payers seemed lost on her.

It turned out her real gripe had nowt to do with the budget, but was a property investment in Croatia that went sour. So in fact it was her own greed and stupidity that landed her in financial trouble.

Really guys, that sort of beal-bochtery does your cause no good. I do hope she's a slightly unhinged outlier who doesn't represent an attitude that's typical in staff rooms around the country. The extent to which she completely detached from reality of people losing their jobs and homes and pensions was almost laughable.

When I am doing my job I have to be on my toes. Any lapse of memory and thought has the ability to damage me, my career, my organisation and all those involved with it. My job doesn't involve dealing with hormonal teenagers, but hardened professionals. My job doesn't last 9pm until 4pm either and I don't get months off during the year. Spare me the nonsense. Teachers have a difficult job, granted, but it's no more difficult than anybody elses job and not having to worry about having your job in 2-3 months time or not isn't a perk enjoyed by many.

Nice work it you can get it! If it's so wonderful why don't you?

Teaching hours and school holidays are based on the amount of hours deemed reasonable for children to spend in school, if you think your children should spend more time in the classroom and have no recreational time to play or participate in extracurricular activities, campaign to have school hours changed.
