Gmail down- how vital is it ?

Gmail suffered what I think is its worst outage ever this morning

    Telegraph , reddit
Google’s web-based email service, Gmail, has crashed this morning, leaving millions of users from Britain to Australia unable to send and receive messages.
I found it quite frustrating - it's odd but this is a free service that I regard as being at least as important than many paid for services (e.g. phone) and much better than any state service I've heard of

But is Google now fallible ?

    I smell Russian hackers.
Thankfully it isn't that vital for me.
I use it, but I use a few other email addresses too.
And I use the phone, mobile and other forms of more antiquated communication that aren't dependent on private infrastructure. I assume most other people are similarly sensible.

    Gmail is evil.

Look for a responsible email provider who uses an interface such as RoundCube.

Better still, host your own email.

Google use your data for all kinds of evil.

    I NEED gmail.

Distractions are very important in my line of work. Pointless emails are almost as good as meetings.

It all very well having backup email addresses but a)who do you know that knows them. b) Do you ever remember the passwords c) When you try and recover the password do you ever remember the answer to the secret question that you gave when you set it up d)Does it then send your forgotten password to the GMail account that is down. Gah

Its not too hard, but it takes a bit of work.

We tried it for a while and found it far less reliable than free e-mail.
