The emergent view within the party is for a loan system. The state cannot afford to continue funding from the exchequer. That is a simple FACT.

If everybody pays, once they have, after a number of years at work, gained the means to do so, then it is inevitable that that is a fairer method than letting those who come from poorer financial backgrounds off with the same product that someone else has to pay for.

Well the transfer to exchequer funding in 1995 certainly didn't do what it said.

FFS, what a load of waffle. So the student gets the loan, gets the education, and emigrates. Great deal.

I agree with him. The present regressive system constitutes a transfer of resources from the poor to the rich. A return of tuition-fees on a means-tested basis will be more progressive, as well as reducing the dependence of universities on non-EEA students (who often don't register with the GNIB as required and disappear into the underground-economy). The State should only intervene when impoverished prevents a family being in a position to afford Third Level education for their children. The rich do not need freebies, and the insistence of the Irish Left, including Labour, on maintaining this regressive transfer of resources underlines the reality that champagne-socialism is the real ideology of that party. They want us to continue paying to keep them in the style to which they have become accustomed.

it is going to be some sort of loans or capped fees isn't it ?

how much would diploma course cost?

what effect will this have on plc cert courses?

i think people of classes and wealth should consider doing it in parts cert diploma degree. even if it ends up costing more, if the figures show less poor going to degree courses but more going to plc, diploma courses then i thinks that good.

one of the biggest mistake of my life was going straight into a 4 year course.

i think university is totally overhyped and oversold

Seeing as 3rd level education is not to be paid for by the taxpayer anymore, can I expect a similar reduction in my tax return this November?

I said it should be means-tested. Having said that I want those who can afford it to pay for it. There are already registration-fees anyhow, which I recall were around €2,000 per annum when I went to DCU. So in a sense we never had "free" third level anyway.
