Election of National University Of Ireland Chancellor

    Dear Friends in P.ie,

March will herald the retirement after ten years of distinguished service of Dr. Garret Fitzgerald as Chancellor of the National University of Ireland, the Governing body for the constituent universities.

There is to be an election held to replace Dr. Fitzgerald and there are two qualified candidates in the race.

The purpose of this post is purely to canvass support for the candidacy of Dr. Maurice Manning, UCD academic, former politician and, nowadays, President of the Irish Human Rights Commission.

Whatever you might think of his politics etc, he is a most qualified candidate and has given sterling service to third level education in this country, and abroad.

I would urge you to visit the site, URL hereunder, and apply for and vote in the forthcoming election.

    Many thanks

The man is eminently qualified. A stellar academic.

    Who are his competitors?

The only other candidate is a UCC chemist, Professor James Heffron.

    Dr. Manning is outstandingly qualified.

Here is Dr. Manning's wikipedia page.

Here is Professor Heffron talking to WACI.

I would urge those with an interest in third level education to peruse the link above, and, if possible, vote.

You would say that, wouldnt you?

Not to diminish in any way Dr Manning and his credentials, but is Chancellor of NUI a Blueshirt-only position?

I am not a FG supporter or voter. I know him academically. He is entirely worthy of the position.

He has distinguished himself in his role at the Irish Human Rights Commission imho.

Graduates have to inform the NUI that they want to vote. Why?

The old system where papers were sent to everyone was bad but the new system is worse.

Who proposed/authorised the change? There was no consultation with graduates that I am aware of eg through Convocation.
How strange that the change took place after Biffo complained about voting for the NUI panel in the Seanad.

By the way, and no insult intended, we all do it, but you could have done a little research before posting that. Dr. Fitzgeralds predecessors in office are:

    TK Whittaker

    Eamonn DeValera

    Archbishop Walsh

Hardly a bastion of the "Blueshirts".
