    Politics and the Leaving Cert

    I was looking at the thread today regarding the Leaving Certificate syllabus encouraging what the Chinese call a "stuffed duck" mentality, when a thought came into my head about using the Leaving Certificate to enhance the level and more importantly the quality of debate on the site.

    This happened while looking at this years Economics Higher level paper...

    Now, many a person here has displayed or at least tried and sometimes failed miserably to explain a decent and reasoned economic argument... leading to varied response.. from downright abuse to back slapping....

    So.. put yourself into the place of a Leaving Cert student... and answer the following question. It should take you about 10 mins maximum, so shouldn't be more than a couple of paragraphs long. You may answer it from your own political perspective i.e. if you're left leaning, give a left leaning response... right leaning, give a right leaning response

    Now lets see who knows their economics or not

    Question 1.

    One of the economic aims of the Government is Balanced Regional Development

    1. Explain the meaning of the underlined term

    2. Outline two policies which the Government could use to promote regional development

    3. "Balanced regional policy has an opportunity cost" Explain this statement giving at least one example to support your answer

    Now.. don't knock others answers, unless you're willing to have a go at answering the questions yourselves... for the really bright sparks.. try answering without consulting a book .. or horror of horrors.. the net

    Fire away

    No, p.iesters it seems are more comfortable shouting opinions than making "reasoned" arguments.

    Balanced regional development means supporting the economic and social development of all regions in
    their efforts to achieve their full potential. This Plan aims to promote the development of all regions in Ireland
    within a co-ordinated, coherent and mutually beneficial framework.

    (1) More efficient Greater Dublin Area: supporting a strong and competitive GDA in order that it
    continues to drive its own development and that of the State through improved and more public
    transport based mobility, development of more compact and sustainable communities and high
    quality international and domestic transportation connections;
    (2) Strong Gateways in other Regions: accelerating the development of strategically placed and
    national scale urban centres to act individually and collectively in delivering more spatially
    balanced patterns of economic development and population growth throughout their Regions;
    Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

    Good start.. now .. would you like to perhaps address part 3 of the question, regarding the Opportunity Cost of regional development ?

    No, and I'll tell you why. I copied those from the Government's NDP book. I just did it in the format it would appear in an exam. Frankly I had never heard of BRD before I googled it so... I'm a fraud.

    For shame .. for shame... and you were about to get a B2... possibly even a B1 if I were in a good mood
