As an ASTI member Im trying to figure out why we are in the ICTU? Recently at an ICTU meeting the teaching unions were told that all ICTU members could continue voting on changes in the conditions of teaching employment. The ASTI/TUI proposed a motion that other unions could not vote on deals that did not personally affect their members. Towards 2016 being a case in point. Despite the ASTI and TUI rejecting this deal by over 80%-they are still stuck with it because the ICTU voted for it overall.
We (the ASTI) left before and came back. Most of the pressurre to return came from the union leadership who were obviously losing out on lucrative committee memberships and jobs. I see no reason why we should be in ICTU and why we cant leave again. Whats the point being in a union if your vote to accept or reject a deal counts for nothing?? If other unions who have nothing to do with education ,can change work practices that will not personally affect them and which they are probably not even aware of then whats the point being in the ASTI?? Leave now!(ICTU)![]()
