Should Dawkins be on the Leaving Cert Curriculum?

Given the vast range of Mythology that is fed to our children, during the course of their educational formation, should some of the works of Richard Dawkins be included in the Leaving Cert Curriculum, to assist in clarifying matters

Clarify "what matters" precisely? Are kids not already sufficently confused? Perhaps a better approach would be to study why the most powerful nation on earth is also the most religious.

And what role would you want his books to take on the cirriculum? If you want everyone to read them they'd have to be done in either English, Irish or Maths as they are the only core subjects. Hardly be very appropriate in that setting would it?

Very little of his Science is relevant to the leaving cert curriculum as evolution while taught as fact in Irish schools, is taught at a very basic level.

Perhaps he should be on the English syllabus?

While I agree that evolution is an idea that must be defended, I find him a crushing bore and a bigot.

That said, I will enjoy the spectacle of the Passion today and hopefully be inspired to do good deeds to my fellow man, in spite of whatever doubts I have over its factual accuracy

Possibly in a sociology course but Dawkins books are commercial and wouldn't be appropriate for study in a science class.

Some of his lectures perhaps but then they would probably be too sophisticated for a leaving cert.
We should be shaping an Ireland based on full respect for the human and civil rights of all our people, an Ireland of which Larkin and Connolly would be very proud.

Truth is not " sophisticated" and can be understood at a very early age. Theories, on the otherhand, can be complex and the golden rule is , the more complex, the more likely it is to be incorrect.

I accept that but Dawkin's theories are just that; they're theories. They haven't been proved factually correct.

I think moving religion to the responsibilities of churches not teachers, and teaching a decent science curriculum would be more beneficial.
