UCD's Student Bar goes bust. University to pay 750k in debts

University Observer: University provide €750,000 to dissolve Student Club

Can anyone explain how it is possible for the only student bar on Ireland largest campus could lose 750,000 euro and go bust? They were previously, if I remember correctly, the most profitable pub in Ireland.

In addition to the failure to file accounts, successive Student Club Committees held no meetings or AGMs in this period, despite being constitutionally obliged to do so. Although details of the members of the Committee for each year were not available, it was confirmed that the responsibility to publish accounts and call Committee meetings during this time resided with the then Student Club Committee Treasurer and Secretary, David Carmody, who had been in the role since 2005.

The Committee have confirmed that the are seeking legal advice regarding the actions of the former Club Treasurer and Secretary.
UCD is going to pay the debt (thats where a number of 'student registration fees' will go this year) and wind up the company. There is now no bar on UCD campus as the other one is closed indefinitely for 'repairs'.

Why dont they just put it up for sale.

Plenty of interest would be generated.

By the looks of things there may be legal options being looked at so that may get answers to these fairly basic questions..... suffice it to say someone was acting the jinnet. No loss that there is no bar now....

Don't forget when the Students Union demanded the hugely successful sports bar be shut to make way for the flopping forum bar at the Clonskea end of the campus. The forum bar is a pale imitation of the Sports Bar.

Not a very good advertisement for their business acumen.I wonder will they will be opening any new courses for bar management?I would be looking for every till receipt since opening if I owned that bar.It boggles the mind how a bar on a student campus where the hobby is getting hammered on every possible occassion can go belly up."UCD is going to pay the debt"??Surely they mean that fee paying students will be doing this??Yes??....I would close it and let other viable local pubs take the customer base or quadruple the price of a pint in their next establishment.Incentive either to drink more or none at all.

Excellent news that the bar is being closed. I went to the more upscale Trinity College but even these the Ents guys were regarded as being totally crooked. Let's hope the Fraud Squad investigate and the guilty parties get jailed.

In previous posts, the acumen of Joe Don Quixote Duffy and Alex Sancho White. When the Trinity people shut down their little shop (specialised in selling poppies and other hate symbols), Duffy opened a SU shop in no 6. Rip roaring success.

Anyway, this bar closing is fantastic news.
