Some Catholic organisations in some places have put money into this. Maybe they think changing the basic definition of marriage will compromise it's meaning across the board.

AFAIK, you have to have some connection to the Parish in question, you have to seek permission to get married there and you have to undergo a marriage preparation course. Catholic marriage is not supposed to be for atheists.

the whole suggestion that the RCC is not anti gay is ridiculous, I spent many a lunch break in college defacing and destroying anti gay literature dispensed by the catholic chaplaincy.
