Ireland is streets ahead of the other PIIGS on innovation

To get an idea of the economic mountain euro zone strugglers Greece and Portugal have to climb, consider this: per million inhabitants, they each filed fewer than eight applications with the European Patent Office in 2010.

Germany, with the advantages of scale that go with a population eight times bigger, lodged 335 patent applications per million residents. But the Czech Republic, of a similar size to Greece and Portugal, managed 16. Much-smaller Ireland boasted 112, according to calculations based on data on the EPO website.

    [..]

Greece and Portugal are not the only innovation laggards. Worryingly, Italy and Spain both spend less than Portugal on R&D and trail Ireland badly on patent filings, at 67 and 31 per million inhabitants respectively.

So anyway, what do you call a desperate, irrational fear of good news about one's country?

    ____phobia?

Loads of people on P.ie have it.

I'd like to know how much of that is 'real' R&D rather than stuff that is thrown into that bucket for tax purposes

I think we should use the phrase PIGGSF from now on, just for lulz at Sarkozy and cause it looks so funny.

Plenty of good, productive and profitable R&D doesn't get patented. Patents have a special function, but they are not an absolute measure of R&D success.
