Government eventually to raise university charges to €3,000-still insufficient

Education Minister Quinn's announcement that university charges would likely be increased eventually to €3,000 was backed up by the Taoiseach Kenney today.

To meet the government's ambition of the knowledge economy, such fees are still insufficient judging by fees charged by the leading international public universities as rated by The London Times 2011-12. Imperial College ranked number 8 and University of London number 18 charge annual fees at the ceiling limit in England of £9,000. University of California at Berkeley, ranked number 10, charges $13,392 to Californian students off campus. About three quarters of undergraduates receive financial aid, however. University of California at Los Angeles, number 13,charges $12,262. University of Toronto at number 19 charges C$5,450 to undergraduates in Arts. In regard to prices, the cost of living in the US and Canada tends to be far lower than in Ireland,so the euro exchange rate make the dollar fees look cheaper than they are.The US and Canadian dollar exchange rates are €0.76 and the British pound €1.20.

Great. Get the knowledge economy by forcing people from college. Good Job Labour.
Abolish fees but brought it back under 'registration'.

A mediocre degree could become worthless. UK employers are giving priority to quality A level students over mediocre college graduates.
