Imo, those on the left are against the social order, while those on the right are for it. Which kinda makes sense I suppose, as I would have more in common with Marxists than the corporate loving statists that have dominated global politics for the best part of 100 years.
You could argue that the Green Party who were left wing are now right wing, as well as Labour (as Lone Wolfe just mentioned)

I'd agree with Cass in that the pure Left/Right divide was certainly a 20th century thing.
However, they are useful terms and indicators on certain social and economic matters.
