    Munster Technological University

Three of the Institutes of Technology in Munster want to combine to form the Munster Technological University namely Cork IT, Limerick IT and IT Tralee.

I welcome the proposal I think that cost saving could be made on administration and it would give extra education opportunities to rural communities.

    Welcome news.
Why did Minister Phil Hogan drop the independent review into planning irregularities within Dublin and Cork city councils and Carlow, Meath, Galway and Cork county councils ?

Great news. Once all the ITs are rebranded as Universities, we can rebrand all our secondary schools as ITs. Of course current universities will need to become multiversities to preserve the pecking order.

Surely they can centralise admin, thereby bringing about cost savings!

Such optimism from a pessimist is awe inspiring.

If anything it looks as if they are adding a layer of administration onto the IT's. In the same way that the NUI is the awarding body for UCG, UCC, NUIG and Maynooth.

This sounds like a good idea in theory - although I'd want to see the specific savings and efficiency improvements being guaranteed from the outset.

Because the cynic in me suspects this could simply be a 'we're better off united than divided' exercise in the face of looming cuts with not much benefit being delivered at all.

We only have to look at the HSE to see how self serving 'state' bodies can be when it comes to mergers with abysmal results etc.

The same assumptions were made when the health boards were merged into the HSE.

The outcome was even more waste than before with all the old structures and jobs maintained under an expensive shiny new brand.
