What education reforms would you recommend?

Looking for what reforms you want to see in primary and secondary education (not 3rd level).
To start off, I want to see a proper debate about how Irish language is taught- starting with primary school. Either we equip teachers with a proper standard in the language to start with, and get them to teach it better and more, or we stop the farce that is the current system.

Also, I want to see national tests for primary school students at 6th class level instated asap and to assess teacher's performance based on that also.

    Higher standards, basically.

Wjhat are your ideas folks? Would be really interested to learn.

Cut all salaries across the board by 10%. Invest savings in actual education, not salaries. Extend school term by 10%. We're paying for it anyway. Problem solved.
If you have any other queries re national policy please feel free to ask.

Being a primary school teacher myself, i would:

    - Stop immediately all funding to private schools by the government.
    - Put something in place where by 'poor' teachers (i choose my words carefully) can be taken out of the classroom - i would consider myself a good teacher who gives pupils the tools to learn. Unfortunately, many many teachers out there are useless. Trust me, ive seen it first hand. Just because you studied at St. Pats, etc etc, doesn't mean you're a good teacher!!

Other ideas - Nationalised testing needs to be made more relevant and up to date to the real world.
Pre fabs - why oh why do we still have these - my school alone has rented a pre fab for the last 15years. Scary to think how much that has cost!

Oh and obviously.......a 50% pay increase!!! (tongue firmly in cheek)

    * Improve the Language education, pronto. Kids should have at least some knowledge of Irish, an european language and a non-latin alphabet language.

    * Primary school organised like Secondary school. National exams for 3rd class and 6th class students.

*More co-educationals/state-ran schools, but faith schools that have a demand(believe it or not, they exist) should remain open.

    * Cut wages in the education sector and raise qualification standards for teachers.

    * Re-organise the secondary subjects a bit(but not the bollix reforms that are on the table at the moment).

Regards salary I don't think (good) teachers are overpaid so I personally don't agree with salary cuts. I'm all for the bad teachers being sacked though. Like they are doing right now in the UK. We should be copying their system as of now.

    Any other ideas?

the only reforms needed are that useless teachers should be fired, teachers should work a full day like everyone else, teachers should get 4 weeks holidays like everyone else and strikes should be banned for teachers. everything else is fine, oh i would immediately scrap irish- its not even worth talking about how useless it is
