    Language Education in Ireland

Interesting article in the IT from a few days ago about a student who got B2 in honours French in the Leaving Cert and went to Paris and discovers they can't read a cafe menu or order a coffee. The student make a very good point at the end of the article about a nephew of taking part of his swimming syllabus in the classroom! To swim you need to be immersed and its the same with languages.

No doubt, immersion education is very effective.

Why did Minister Phil Hogan drop the independent review into planning irregularities within Dublin and Cork city councils and Carlow, Meath, Galway and Cork county councils ?

Doesn't always work that way with the Irish education system.
My wife did German in college. During that time she took a break and went and lived in a small German town for a year. Going back to college in Ireland she was failed on her final oral German exam.
Bear in mind she had lived and worked in Germany for at least a year. She had to do some sort of appeal to get it.
Turns out it was because she had the German equivalent of a culchie accent.

My kids are bilingual and among the things we do it download kids programmes in the 2nd language and they can watch it in the car or instead of normal tv. 30min 3 times a week in a classroom is not enough to get a working knowledge of a language

And that's the funny thing. Research indicates that Spanish-speaking children who follow an immersion programme not only become fluent in Catalan, but also their Spanish does not suffer. In Ireland standard's of English and mathematics in Irish-medium schools is well above the national average.

The way it works is that you're supposed to provide evidence to back up an assertion. Otherwise this descends into a bunch of pseudonymous blowhards talking ************************e.

If you'd read the link provided by ger12 you'd know it has already dealt comprehensively with your 'point'.

I did, it just seem to state it as a fact? and I'm not saying it doesnt help, but in the case of Gael schools there could be other factors at play, younger teachers with more modern teaching methods etc. but given that the topic is about learning languages , its probably best stick to the topic.
If you want a suggestion it would be to designate X number of schools as German , French or other language immersion "lite" schools where say a third of the day is in that language from infants
