Maybe the Dail might get uni status. Leo is cutting his teeth in Transport, Tourism and Gobsmacking gobisms. Noonan is a Bondholder specialising in German government Bondholding and Enda is hoping for a degree in Sir Adolfs addresses to the Nation

"We" commission the "Hunt Report". Recommendations include "Mergers of institutes of technology and of smaller colleges". This countries finances are not a position to provide the suggested 500million increase per year needed to boost a sector already struggling. We know that US Multinationals have expressed concern about the quality of Irish graduates.

Now, we're told (quite rightly) that we can't have a hospital at every crossroads. So is this being done to satisfy a political agenda? Yes.
Why did Minister Phil Hogan drop the independent review into planning irregularities within Dublin and Cork city councils and Carlow, Meath, Galway and Cork county councils ?

Most pointless nonsense ever.. We seem to be struck with this affliction of thinking in Ireland that it is some huge country...

Waterford is less that two hours from both Cork and Dublin..

This is an exercise in politics.

When they don't get the numbers for their dedicated technology courses; watch out for the growth of typical 3rd level fluff to fill the gaps.. And I'm sure remuneration for the lucky will have to reflect this new found University status..

This same affliction is why we have every town expecting a hospital at their doorstep.

The 'gombeens' from south east ran to Dublin with a petition to Leinster House...You would have to admire their conviction though....

Ludicrous decision. We have too many higher education institutes as it is. They are being sprinkled about for electoral gain rather than for educational advancement. Parish pumpery at its worst and most costly.

I suppose I wonder if the rules are just being re-written to allow this to occur - and if Carlow IT is being included just so's they don't feel all left out and stuff. I'd also wonder that, if our real objective is to advance some educational objective, maybe we should be downgrading some of our universities to some lower status, rather than upgrading a couple of ITs. Maybe NUI Maynooth should become Maynooth IT. (Sell it to them as giving them an opportunity for their students to say "I got my degree at MIT")

I actually am open to persuasion on this. I won't be convinced by arguments to the effect that "The South East deserves a University", although I do know that the South East hasn't had the largesse thrown at it that other regions - more practiced at giving the poor mouth - have managed to secure. But is there actually scope for a new university - assuming this tech university concept means something? And is there a ratchet effect in third level status? Can objective criteria be retrospectively applied to the existing universities, to see if one should be dropped in status? And, finally, Carlow IT being included in the upgrade - wtf?

What is the population of area to be served by the technical college and is it big enough to support the college?

I understand Carlow IT has an excellent programme in biotech thanks to the business connections of the department head and the focus on specific training for the needs of biotech companies. Would excellent programmes like this in southeast ITs be helped or hurt by the new university and would they be incorporated into it?

Wasn't Tipp's Institute blended in with LIT? The original decision to found it emanated with Noel Davoren, perhaps?
