When I qualified as a teacher centuries ago only a very small number got honours degrees (possibly 10%). In recent years the entire number has been reversed. Nearly all new graduates have one. A huge rise in national intelligence or dumbing down of honours standard? I go with the latter. In 1969 when the Common Basic Scale was introduced there was little or no comment on the Hons allowance as it had very little impact on most of those working then. Perhaps it should only be now given out to 1st class honours recipients, as 2:2s and 2:1s have lost their gold standard currency.

No other company/industry will pay you a premium based on your degree over the course of your career. You may get it initially but after that, performance is all that matters.

I'd replace it, on a cost neutral basis, with a system which rewards performing teachers. How to do that would be difficult but, hey, whats the point of a department of education if they cannot figure out things like that?
The better degree meant you were ahead in the queue for a job while some employers wouldn't look at you unless you had a 2.1 in my profession (accountancy). If a teacher has a honours degree they should be considered first for the job before a teacher without one. Does the allowance stay with a teacher for the whole of their career? If so that is crazy.

And sure look at it from your point of view. . . .you can spoof your anti-teacher waffle on two threads rather than one.

Or perhaps you don't want a new thread with the new revised lower figures as many are coming on here thinking the thread title and OP are accurate when it is clear they are out of date from today.

    I have you copped on!
For what it's worth, I think it would be worth another thread also as it is a specific issue worth discussing on it's own.

    Yes, I believe it does.

RobertW is the real man to answer that though as I am only going off what i have been told and, as such, it is possible (unlikely though ) I am mistaken

Why can't you start a thread? You have enough posts!

also, where's the waffle? you haven't highlighted it yet!

I'm not the one spouting on about PS deductions.. when really speaking of taxes that all employed persons in Ireland pay.

Where are the young members of the INTO,ASTI and TUI? The allowances in question were fought for over many years, particularly in the 1960s and represented a major improvement in terms for members of the INTO and TUI in particular.
