Hawking is looking for a theory of everything, he's still a very serious thinker, not a propagandist. He's still working on the physics, not theology or the atheist equivalent.

I dont see that that follows. Neither Heisenberg nor Godel discount a theory that would unify fields. Weak nuclear forces and electromagnitism were unified in the late 1960s. There's no reason to believe that other fields may not also be unified in a single theory.
