World Book Day 04.03.10

World Book day is celebrating 13 years on March 4th. A worthwhile cause that, i think, everyone will agree with?

The relevant websites are; World Book Day in Ireland, Irish W.B.D., Childrens Books, Book Tokens, Book Aid International, Quick Reads, Readathon, Booksellers Association and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

For a list of participating bookstores see here; Booksellers Association: Bookshop Directory

I suppose i started this thread so that posters can talk about their favourite book(s) or at least those that they like/dislike and also to raise awareness of the event and some of the issues regarding the topic like literacy. I couldn't find a thread on the subject so i started my own.

I'll start...

3. The Book With No Name by Anonymous, and it's sequel, The Blue Moon. [Weird but Fascinating, not to mention some excellent humour]
4. The Fires and the Shadows; A Collection of Classic Ghost Stories. [just finished this one and thought it was excellent. It features Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, Arthur Conan Doyle and various others.]

Literacy in Ireland

The OECD’s International Adult Literacy Survey found that one in four adults surveyed in Ireland did not show the literacy skills and confidence needed to take part effectively in society. Nearly 30% of the labour force has lower secondary education or less. With the recent increases in adult literacy budgets, participation in VEC adult literacy services has increased from 5,000 students in 1998 to 35,000 in 2005. However, only an estimated 7% of adults with literacy difficulties receive literacy tuition through local education services.

Happy World Book Day @Funky ! ln the words of my BF , " Its great to be literate, its dinky to be numerate". Give someone a gift of a book, poem or song cos for too long in lreland there have been those who treat art and education as a distasteful practice and would happily build bonfires to destroy the words of others.

You too dot!

Ever wonder what's in a book? ... ... ... You have to read it to find out.
