A good editorial piece on this issue. It is great to hear that the majority are now in favour of secularization of the education system. It is now over to the politicians to get on with the re-shaping of our education system. Religion should become an extracurricular activity for those who wish for it.

By all means let there be catholic ethos education for the minority who seem to want it but let the rest of us have an alternative.

if you don't want your child to learn religion at school send them to an educate together school or homeschool them ,you are aware that if you remove religion from catholic schools the same has to happen with muslim, jewish and protestant schools.its all or nothing .a lot of these schools are on church land .the state would have buy these or build new ones .saying that the state should seize them from the church would start a dangerous precedent.should we seize football pitches from the GAA because some coachs may have been involved in abuse.

why should it be all or nothing?

educate together schools art sadly not an option for many people. for example, there isn't one in dundalk. home schooling is a bit weird. Anyway, we're talking about more than half of people not wanting the catholic church controlling education. you can't expect half to population to homeschool.

There is only a tiny number of ET schools and the suggestion of educating at home is a real "let them eat cake"suggestion.

to remove the ethos of one religion from school and let that of other religions continue would be sectarian.
if there are enough parents in an area to come together and organise an educate together school i'm sure they should be able to secure premises and funding to start their own school ,that seems to be how the gael scoileanna came about. secularism in technically a belief system so they should be intitled to the same funding as other beliefs.
