Academic salaries in this country are off the wall.

    Close down half them.

This is so classically Fianna Fáil in its stupidity.

    1) a brand is internationally famous. So I know, lets abolish it and create a new body to do the same role with a name no-one will recognise! D'oh!

    2) You will supposedly save €3m a year. Funny that, when it actually costs a small fraction of that. How can you save money it doesn't cost you to have it? D'oh!

    3) abolishing it to save €3 million a year (less than it costs!) will require a new body to be created to clarify which degrees in Ireland are valid and recognised and which are from makey-up bodies and worthless. So lets see. The new body will need a new chief executive on a nice hefty salary. A nice big board (state appointed, nach!), all on nice expenses. A nice new headquaters. Nice new headquarters staff. PR department to promote itself and create awareness. Nice expense account to have a logo designed, etc. How much are we saving again?

    4) The two universities that have used NUI in their name will have to be renamed, again. So new corporate branding, PR, costly legislation drafting, parliamentary time, etc.

    5) The new defederated universities will then begin an even more aggressive (and expensive) bout of rivalry to establish themselves as top dog over the others, and reduce the others to second division. And who will be paying for this? Why, the taxpayer, of course! D'oh.

That is going to be an . . . em . . . expensive saving of €3m, Bart! Are you sure your name isn't Homer?

    Good analysis.

Please, sir, can we have some more...

So, the 15 staff of the NUI are to go. ( See Irish Times dated today; National University of Ireland to be Dissolved).

Pro-rata, I humbly ask for another education-related, venerably aged quango to be dissolved; namely the 8 staff of the Irish Council for International Students.
Catch their website at Home - Irish Council for International Students (ICOS).
This is 'an independent [not financially, alas] organisation advocating for the rights and welfare of international students in Ireland'.
[I have been unable to identify the publicly funded quango advocating for the rights and welfare of Irish students in Ireland, or how many staff it has.]
The chief duty of the Council is administering the Fellowship Training Programme, which funds foreign nationals from countries receiving Irish government aid to study in Ireland- all 59 of them in 2008. That's 7.3 students per staff member; over-staffing or what? The wages bill for the Council is paid entirely out of the government's Irish Aid budget-another whack of our bogus foreign aid budget that never gets out of Ireland.

We can now abolish this nonsense.

FF/Green can always be counted on to eviscerate, stamp on and obliterate cultural and academic icons in their rush to homogenise artistic and academic work. This comes on the heels of Slane, Tara, the attack on protestant school funding and blasphemy. They are old, tired and clapped out of ideas : http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...262843984.html

Will this be a problem if,as Ianticipate, when given the opportunity in a Referendum, the people will decide to abolish this useless institutution that in this day and age fulfils no useful role in Irish society and is wasting money that in our current perilious position could be put to much better use.

Its a waste of money re NUI. I'm glad that is going to be abolished at last. Please cull any more useless Quango's by the 3rd level sector education.

It's practically going down the drain for years. Next stop HEA along with other associated bodies.

It's expected that the Redress board will close down at the end of this year as they - Dept of Education will have to close their Redress board unit and transfer any staff to other sectors that's badly needed.

Any other Quango's held by the Dept of Education needs to be abolished as well thus creating savings.
