Batt's move will remove obstacle to further integration between UCD & Trinity as driven by Brady.

What should the combined UCD / TCD be known as?
I imagine that he will be most pleased and that he will respond with an even wider grin than usual. If UCD can save anything on this on their side they may even be able to install some gold-plated fittings in the toilets for senior UCD academics.

Notable that Batt O'Keeffe won't answer questions in Dail Eireann but will spin this on Radio FF.

"Entitlement" is better, and has the hubristic benefits of the current labour market..

On a serious note, while the manner in which the Seanad is elected is profoundly undemocratic, it would be awful to forfeit electing the three senators NUI , and would the three Trinity Senators be threatened in the interest of parity?

This, for me, is the real loss. (and the fact that nearly all my family are NUI graduates and are, to a man / woman, rabidly anti FF)

Never ever going to happen. Kudos on the abolition of the NUI as well.

off topic i know but when michael d gets up and starts riding his high horse as he did on this subject earlier today, is he not obliged to refer to the Dail as the 'Dail' and not 'Parliament'? In Ireland we have the Dail and not Parliament.
Its seems unusual for a TD to use this term. Next he will be calling himself an MP.
he did the same yesterday when on his high horse about the banking enquiry issue.

Might as well go ahead, they're presenting themselves as one and the same (in advance of the PRTLI funding decision anyway)

Unenthusiastic about any of the buggers.

Unusual, but hardly worth worrying about.
    Constitution:
Article 15 1. 1° The National Parliament shall be called and known, and is in this Constitution generally referred to, as the Oireachtas.

    You and me both.
Then we can rename UL to NIHEEEE.

The whole point of the wording of the 1979 referendum was that in granted to the Oireachtas the power to alter the composition of the electorate for the 6 3rd level seats that no institution could claim it as giving their existence constitutional protection. This was aimed at TCD at the time, which was talked about as merging with UCD as its Arts wing. Ironic that it is the NUI that has gone not TCD.
Surprising it isn't the Trinity senators they aren't trying to get rid of, after all life would be much easier for ff if Shane Ross wasn't around and Norris might be considered a pain at times to poor ould donnie "the wig" cassidy.

So of all the quangoes or state organsiations they target NUI, one that has been around one of the longest.
It just appears a bit, well mealy mouthed to me.
Any chance they can dump NRA (who can't ensure all the main roads motorways are drivable or didn't ever bother thinking that someone driving from Dundalk to Ballinasloe on motorway might actually want ot pull over just to have a pi** ), or pehaps Railway Procurement Agency, or one of the other 100 odd quangoes created since 1997 by memoirs bertie ?
