Students, researchers lose access to documents due to cutbacks

SFI - Science Foundation of Ireland - has withdrawn 6 of the 9 million it gives to IReL - the on-line data bases used for research in Irelands universities. Some of the sellers - Blackwell for example -have given IRel a moritorium on payment to see if they can get funding from elsewhere.

What this means is that students and resesearchers may come back in the new year to find themselves unable to access the papers, texts, monographs etc etc for their work.

Okay, if there's anything that's going to get me out onto the streets, it's this. Although I've a fealing Trinity have a seperate account (they certainly have more databases than other universities), do you know if everyone shall be effected TOB?

Not only that the funding we as students with disabilities get for supports such as notetaking so on in 3rd level education were cut by 25% last year and again another 25% this year.

It seems there is lot of CUTS in the Education section.

Another "cut " that didn't make the headlines.

Young Liberal - all the main universities have individual subscriptions to alot of databases and individual electronic journals outside of IReL. However, the likes of Lexis, Justis etc are all linked through IReL to some extent in both TCD and UCD. They'll sort something out though.

They'd better, it'd be some disaster otherwise.

Of course they will, access to journals is an absolute imperative if you are engaging in research. It is more important than access to books in alot of circumstances. If necessary they will have to make cuts under another heading... but I really can't see access to the major journals being shut off as a result of this. That would essentially spark the end of the Irish universities. Won't happen.
