all this while students with wealthy backgrounds get "free" fees - this is still the case no?
disgusting
this is just going to make college inaccessible for many people - while putting a further strain on social welfare and leading to emigration
Has anyone seen the back page of the "Village" magazine this week:
it goes something like this:
Myth:
Third Level Education is Free in Ireland
Fact:
Students pay a €1500 registration charge per year
In countries where they have "Fees", third level education is often cheaper, for example:
Germany €1000 per year
Austria €726 per year
Luxembourg €200 per year
Portugal €500 per year
Belgium €800 per year
Third Level registration fees have increased by 124% since 2002.
This has happened in conjuction with cuts to the core Hea grant.
The government wants to raise the registration fee even further.
This will hurt families already hit hard by the recession and cause many students to drop out. This is also likely to have a negative effect on many local economies greatly dependent on students for business.
This is an OUTRAGE!
I say scrap the registration fee, and quickly implement a means tested fees scheme like we had in the eighties, and let those from less wealthy backgrounds have a chance at an education they deserve - not this farce of a registration system - let's see who exactly is paying what for whom - let's be real here.
Because so far the policies currently being pursued are in fact benefiting the wealthy in a way.
Plus ca change.
