Of course spelling and grammar matter, and should be taught. However in relation to reading and writing competence there is a big difference between for example adding an e to truly and spelling 'was' as 'woz'; and a chasm between the recognition of either of these words as indicating the imperfect tense of the verb to be, and not recognising them at all.
It is for those who suffer from the latter problem that an understanding of dyslexia as a condition is important.
I think Frank was getting more at the point of how the principle of variant spelling reinforces the idea that young people are incapable of learning and using language correctly and not a pedantic criticism of variant spelling.

Sur(e)ly this has a corrosive effect on young people's confidence in themselves. The idea put forward that Shakespeare was a bad speller is used as a comfort blanket for those that cannot or can't be bothered to learn to spell correctly.

P.S. And as for Frank's integrity, whilst with the RCP I always found Frank to be consistent.

He's definititly consistent in his contrariness.
And comparing a limited tolerance for variations in spelling with moral/political/philosphical relativism is a feat only manageable by a communist libertarian back to basics climate change sceptical card carrying member of the wapping/mail commentariat ( sorry frank if I've left one of your revisions out).
