Union leader refuses to sign Tax Commission report
The trade union representative on the government’s Commission on Taxation refused to sign its report when it was presented to the commission’s members for final approval last Wednesday.
Brendan Hayes, a vice-president of Siptu, would not approve the report, telling other members of the commission that it was not sufficiently redistributive of tax revenues.
The report, which was due to be presented to the Minister for Finance last week, recommends that income taxes be reduced to as low a level as possible if new levies, such as a carbon tax and property tax, are introduced.
The other members of the commission agreed that taxes on work should, in principle, be kept as low as possible.
