New taxes on way to plug €5bn council debt - Property & Mortgages, Personal Finance - Independent.ieHOMEOWNERS are facing property tax and water charges as council debt has spiralled beyond €5bn.
Startling new figures obtained by the Irish Independent show that local councils now owe €1,179 for every man, woman and child in the State -- a 10pc increase in one year -- and the figure is to keep rising.
The soaring debt comes as the Commission on Taxation considers new water charges, a property tax, a carbon tax and a raft of other increased levies for already hard-pressed families. The commission is examining the funding issue and will recommend a return of domestic rates, possibly through an annual property tax, and the introduction of water charges.
