New taxes on way to plug €5bn council debt

HOMEOWNERS are facing property tax and water charges as council debt has spiralled beyond €5bn.

Startling new figures obtained by the Irish Independent show that local councils now owe €1,179 for every man, woman and child in the State -- a 10pc increase in one year -- and the figure is to keep rising.

The soaring debt comes as the Commission on Taxation considers new water charges, a property tax, a carbon tax and a raft of other increased levies for already hard-pressed families. The commission is examining the funding issue and will recommend a return of domestic rates, possibly through an annual property tax, and the introduction of water charges.

    Water Tax
    Property Tax
    Reduced Welfare
    Pay Cuts
    No jobs
    Increased Income Tax
    Increased VAT
    Carbon Tax
    Levies
    Education cuts
    Medical cuts

Just how are we supposed to live?

There are now 13 councils who owe more than €100m each to a combination of banks, building societies and to state agencies. The biggest year-on-year increases have been recorded in the larger local authorities around Dublin and Cork.

Fingal County Council saw its debt rise by €90m between 2007 and 2008 and now owes nearly half a billion euro.

Dublin City Council's debt increased by €70m in the same time and its total debt stands just shy of €1bn.
Why not cut their over inflated pensions?

Water rates , long overdue, the waste of water in this country is obscene

As for the rest either we finance local government or we abolish it and centralise everything....... Like the health service and education and so many other things we have the worst of both worlds...... bit of this bit of that ....

If water was safe and decent I wouldnt mind paying for it.

As it is, I will not pay a cent for the brown muck that comes out of my taps!

At the moment I spend €10 per week for bottled water. Thats €520 per year.

The local authority can have it all if they improve the quality of my drinking water. But somehow I doubt they will.

Im sure im not the only one!

Notice aswell how the Citys such as Cork and Dublin have some of the largest debts increases.

No doubt this is a direct reaction to the increased populations all demanding services from the local authority.

Its catch 22 , water supply in so many places is so poor due to lack of investment , apparently it will take billions to bring our water up to scratch nationally

A reasonable allowance per person free then if you want to wash your BMW every second day fecking pay for it

Water rates are a good idea in principle. Households should have a daily minimum allowance and then pay-as-you-go for the rest it. If you are paying for the water you leave running in the sink while you brush your teeth, you might think twice about turning the tap off.

I don't think I'd fancy visiting you Bluefish.

Only €10 for water, how many litres does that cover?

Surely not enough for drinking, showers, laundry, washing up, flushing the toilet, etc.

That said, at the moment I have a leaking pipe outside my house, Its on the far side of the road.

The pipe has been leaking for at least 3 weeks so far, I have reported it as have others.

Still todate nobody from the council have come out to fix it!

Its reduced my water pressure and my neighbours!

    Just for drinking!

Have to put up with Brown Baths.

Not to bad in the shower you dont notice it so much!

And the Fairy liquid turns the water greenish!
