Sign Of The Times - Headline News: 20 High Skilled Jobs Over Next 5 years

A couple of years ago this would barely get a mention in the media and would certainly not be headline news. That said it is a small step in the right direction.

The Smart Economy initiative is working a charm.

I found this utterly bizarre, if not somewhat disconcerting.

I would expect that McDonalds Corporation will create more than 20 jobs in Dublin in the next 5 years, without support from any of IDA/FAS/Enterprise Ireland/DSFA Jobskills/Upskills/JobStart/Jobjob/etc, but I don't think it will be on the RTE 8 o'clock news headlines.

A rock concert in the O2 generates more employment.....

OR is it that we are about to go into Spaceship development (purely for our elected TDs of course)

What's going on here? Is it political interference in the news? It certainly wasn't worthy of ANY slot on Radio/TV or front page newsprint imo.

Have to say, I got this as a press release from Mary Coughlan's department embargoed until Midnight last night.

This Midnight Embargo thing is done just for the benefit of the newspapers (and Morning Ireland). But yeah, I'd say many many more people lost their jobs between the sending of the press release and the embargo time.

That makes an average of four jobs per year for the next five years! The IDA are really pulling out all the stops these days! How much will this jonb creation cost us?

    Rocket scientists indeed!

Does this vindicate Rody Molloy and Mary Harney and the Fás adventures to NASA in Florida? Could it be a spin out from Fás?

I don't think this is being considered newsworthy because of the number of jobs, but more because it's about spaceships. Does anyone here not like Star Wars?

Incidentally, An Bord Snip drew a very sceptical eye on Ireland's membership of the ESA (which costs €14.5m per year), but we seem to be drawing some value for it - I doubt if this company would be setting up here were we not members. It'd be a shame and a waste if we pulled out, IMO.
Nothing will motivate the lazy / apathetic / Americanised / west-British types to embrace their culture and the Irish language.

    WHatever about the shame....the waste???

It costs 14.5 million a year outgoing for ESA membership

We get 1 company to bring in 20 Jobs over 5 years.

    So, 14.5 x 5 = 72.5m cost over 5 years

Salary of 20 Jobs at an average of anything from 100,000 to say, our Taoiseachs salary of 500,000 approx

Salary Revenue to Ireland over 5 years of anything from 2 million to 10 million per annum totalling 10m to 50million over 5 years. So lets take the half million salary as being "appropriate" for teh job (i'ts not -but lets be generous hey?)

Net cost to Ireland for being in the ESA after 5 years is 72.5m - 50m = 62.5m

Shame yes, waste - absolutely not- it would be a saving!!!

Ireland get out of ESA now!!

Dead right. It's a sad day where 20 jobs over five years is a news story. Four. Jobs. A. Year.

Meanwhile, ignoring An Bord Snip, Bord Na Mona is adding staff...
