An Bord Snip: Lenihan neuters it before publication.

'Bord Snip' report to be published tomorrow.

RTÉ Business: Government to publish cuts report

"Mr Lenihan said the report will give an exact figure for the number of surplus staff in the public service.

He said dealing with the surplus numbers can be dealt with over time with minimal disruption to public services."

So no immediate redundancies so the pay bill will remain the same so the private sector will be screwed again.

What party hired all the surplus staff?

What party was responsible for benchmarking?

What party was responsible for the property bubble?

Who was minister for finance when all this was going on?

That makes sense. There should be a definite timescale to reduce/redeploy the surplus...90 days.

Nothing like 90k. I would say surplus will be 10k. Add on extra public servants to deliver social welfare and to regulate financial system. We will hire 5k.

They should make at least 20,000 redundant ASAP. It is a joke to make out that this won't hit front line services though.

Do you really think "pencil pushers" do no good just because you don't see them?

many teachers should be made redundant too.

If you make them redundant you have to pay them redundancy and that could cost a fortune. With the size of the PS there are bound to be at least a few thousand due to retire each year. You dont have to pay them redundancy.

First we need to know how many we need to get rid of. Then we need to know how many are leaving anyway. Then we can work out what to do with the rest.

New PS contracts are the way forward, end this job for life scam. Introduce a salary cap of 80k ( yes, 80k, that goes for ministers also). Limit the number that can be on this highest salary.

Okay Guys theres 360,000 public workers from 20 yrs old to 65 thats 45 yrs so theres roughly 8,000 of every age in the P.S, so i would say that around 10,000 retire every year and another 2,000 move on to other things, thats 12,000 P.S per year that will leave the P.S so i dont think theres much point in making people reduntant.

    Statutory redundancy isn't that much
    Redundancy payments-Information from CitizensInformation.ie

Two weeks a year (up to max of 600), so as mushroomed in FF last 10 years, lets say average has 10 years experience, 20 weeks which is MAXIMUM of 12000 per person but would probably average less as the junior people would be on less than 600 a week so let's say about 10k to lay off somebody.

Of course, they could concentrate the layoffs on the people who joined in the last five years too. Another option would be to change the redundancy law so a max of five years worth of allowances i.e. 10 weeks i.e. 6k.
