So... what are we predicting for the next budget?

I have not seen one of these threads since the last budget. Lets see how our minds and attitudes change between now and december

I dont think the government will be able to pass the type of budget that it needs to pass so we will either get a general election or a half-arsed budget (circa 2b cuts).

There will be about €4bn cuts- which will be wiped out by €1-2bn depending on the unemployment increases.
Another €1bn on taxes.

People must realise we have committed this to both the EU and our bank (the bondholders).
It will still result in a deficit for the next year of about €17bn (which will have to be borrowed) before any additional amounts are considered for the effects of NAMA and further recapitalisation of our banks.

If they don’t get it through, a FG led government will have to do a similar budget, with presumably an increased effort on reform, zero based budgeting and about 25,000 redundancies across the non-productive parts of the PS.

FF will cut capital spending as it will be afriad to cut current spending by the amounts required.

There will be more PAYE tax increases as it easier politically even though Ministers have said they don't want to touch.

I am sure there will be more u-turns in the weeks following after moaning from interest groups.

Hopefully Lenihan's fiscal moves will provide enough fiscal laxative to unplug the banking sector and get money flowing again.

.Levies to be increased at the top end.
.Childrens benefit to be means tested
:Social welfare to be cut( moreso for those on it long term)
.The usual price rise for fags, booze, petrol
.Greens to come up with another hair brained idea, only for it to be shot down by FF
And finally the clincher, Lenihan will cancel Christmas

No No there is a constitutional issue there!
Beside I would hazard a guess that the IMF or ECP will be calling the financial shots by then.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

Child Benefit should be means tested and the top rate of tax should be put up to 50%. Social Welfare should not be touched but if it is say to €200 a month the bonus should be reintroduced. There should be more cuts in TD's and Senator's pay, entitlements and expenses etc. and 4 Ministerial positions and departments should be scrapped and merged with others. Cigarettes to be put up and drink sold in off-licenses and shops to protect publicans.
