The solution to the economic crisis!

I received this in an email yesterday.
    Could it work??

    Dear Mr. Cowen

Please find below my suggestion for fixing Irelands economy.

Instead of giving Seven Billion Euro's to Anglo Irish Bank who will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Republican Retirement Plan:

There are about 1 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them 7 million Euro apiece severance for early retirement with the following
    stipulations:

    1) They MUST retire. One million job openings - Unemployment fixed

    2) They MUST= buy a new car. One million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed

    3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed

    4) They MUST send their kids to school/college/university - Crime rate fixed

    5) They MUST buy 100 Euro of alcohol/tobacco a week .....and there's your money back in duty/tax etc

It can't get any easier than that!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of government pay back their falsely claimed expenses and allowances

If you think this would work, please forward to everyone you know. If not, please disregard.

    Yes I've seen this before.
One million people. Seven million euro each.
Comes to seven thousand billion euro.
If we can't afford one Anglo-Irish, how can we afford a thousand of them?
If there is a future, it will be Green.

I think there is a basic problem with the sums here.
7 Billion = only 7,000 million. So you could only make that number of millionaires.
Any suggestion that would keep €7 Billion of our money out of the hands of those wasters in Anglo would be good though.

It would make more sense to give Anglo-Irish SFA and spend the 7 billion on a building programme for schools and hospitals.
    • Builders back in work
    • Reduce unemployment
    • Get better schools and hospitals
If there is a future, it will be Green.

100 euro of tobacco and alcohol a week would finish them off pretty quickly, so that would solve the zero pensions problem too

Although I think it should all be given to software developers with young familes who want to spend more quality time at home, and who want a career change into something more outdoors. Also give it to bored housewives of same.

No, they are both a thousand million.
There used to be the British billion which was a million million, but it never caught on in any walk of life. Last heard of about 1964.

The problem is with shifting values. It's only in the last 20 years or so that a billion was reduced to a thousand million on this side of the Atlantic.

Some of us are old enough to remember when a billion meant a million million. What you young whippersnappers refer to as a billion is actually a milliard.

Now where did I put me teeth?
